What's New in Visual Case 2.6?

January 1, 2004

Significant Upgrade

Version 2.6 is a free upgrade to existing users. This release delivers significant enhancements as well as fixing some non-critical problems.

The enhancements include:

Support for three new databases: Pervasive SQL, PostgreSQL and Interbase.

User-defined data-types are now forward and reverse-engineed for SQL Server, Sybase, PostgreSQL and Interbase databases.

Sequences, Functions and Rules are now supported for several of the databases where applicable.

Please see our supported databases tutorial for complete information.

Users have the option of autocreating primary keys each time an autonumber column is created.

The database engineering wizard now provides more detailed progress information.  In addition, users can disable the prompt to confirm the engineer cancel from the Preferences panel.

Database Entities are auto-named based on the database type. For example, in Microsoft Access the first index in Table1 will be called Index1 as will the first index in Table2. For SQL Server the first index in Table1 will be called Index1 and the first index in Table2 will be named Index2. This is because, in Access, index names are unique to the table but in SQL Server they must be unique to the database. If an Access database is converted to SQL Server numeric suffixes will be added as needed to maintain the uniqueness of names.

A progress bar is now shown when projects are opened or saved and when database types are changed.

Unfortunately, existing users and those evaluating Visual Case cannot use live update to install this upgrade.  Instead, please re-install the product from our download site.

Round trip Java Code Engineer
We've included a beta release of our new code engineer for Java.  Visual Case converts UML class diagrams to Java source code and vice versa.  Easily update existing code based upon changes to your model with our intuitive and powerful code engineer.  Try it out and let us know what you think!

Reliable Database Engineering
Our database engineer is now better than ever, with new support for Sybase Anywhere in addition to improved support for Oracle, Access, Sybase Enterprise and Microsoft SQL Server.  We've worked to improve the robustness, reliability and accuracy of our engineer.

Entity Relationship Cardinality and Foreign Key Integrity Constraints
Visual Case now includes full support for foreign key cardinality and integrity constraints.

C# and Visual Basic .NET Datatypes and Class Import
Designing for .NET couldn't be easier with Visual Case's new class lookup and .net data type support.  Full code engineers are coming soon.

What's New in Visual Case 2.2?

Quick Links
When an object is selected, Visual Case shows quick link buttons around its perimeter. You can click and drag to create links from the selected object to other objects.  If you end the link on an empty space in the diagram, Visual Case will create a new object at that location.

Auto-draw Link Options
Visual Case has the ability to automatically draw a link on a diagram if the two objects at the end of the link exist in the dictionary.  Sometimes, however, this functionality is undesired if a specific view of the system is being shown on the diagram.  In version 2.2, you can set whether links should be automatically drawn using the right-click menu.

Access XP Support
We've added Access XP to the databases that can be forward and reverse-engineered.

What's New in Visual Case 2.1?

Dynamic Viewer
Easily browse through classes, tables, use cases, data flows, flow charts, & deployment designs using our new dynamic viewer.  You no longer have to struggle to create and layout a diagram after reverse engineering a large database.  Simply start the dynamic viewer, and select table after table to see what connects to it and what it connects to.  You can create new tables, new foreign keys and modify existing objects right in the viewer.

Sybase 12.5
We've added full support for Sybase including full reverse and forward engineers and customization of our SQL editor.

Improved Alignment and Distribution Features
Visual Case's new align and distribute features are now easier to use, more intuitive and more accessible.  New additions include align centres both horizontally and vertically, match widths and match heights.  These added to our already great diagramming features make Visual Case one of the most effective diagramming tools on the market.
